Symptoms of Adult Onset Diabetes: A Word To The Wise

One of the most difficult facts about finding the symptoms of adult onset diabetes (Type 2 diabetes), is that in the beginning stages of the disease there really are no suggested symptoms.  While there are generally no real recognizable symptoms, there are many risk factors such as a waistline that measures greater than 40 inches for a man, or 35 inches for a woman.  Another risk factor is a body mass index that is greater than 25.  Those people who live a sedentary lifestyle with very little physical activity or exercise or have poor nutrition are susceptible. A diet high in processed and refined foods are also at a greater risk.

One of the few signs or symptoms of adult onset diabetes is a high fasting blood glucose reading that is above 126 mg/dl.  This fasting blood glucose reading can be obtained by collecting a blood sample first thing in the morning upon waking up before eating or drinking anything.  Another way to get this reading is to get an oral glucose tolerance test done which is administered by a doctor where you will be required to fast for a least eight hours and then drink a sugar solution.  After drinking the sugar solution your blood will be drawn and measured at one hour intervals for the next three hours.  If your blood glucose level is 200 mg/dl or greater each time then you are considered a diabetic.

Commonly, extreme thirst and frequent urination have been considered symptoms of adult onset diabetes.  However, these symptoms can also be indicators of other health related concerns and so are not reliable symptoms by themselves.  It is very important to understand that it is a lot easier to prevent diabetes than to try and control it.

Therefore, you need to understand that because no symptoms of adult onset diabetes really exist it has become a very complex disease that can slowly and silently destroys the body one day at a time.  Diabetes, which is sometimes called the silent killer, attacks and clogs the small capillaries that feed your heart, brain, feet, kidneys and eyes because of this action, this disease accelerates the aging of the organs and tissues within the body.  A word to the wise, the best form of treatment is diet and exercise!  Do not rely on a mere review of symptoms, take proactive action.
