A few other ways to prevent diabetes are to kick some bad habits.  Smoking is at the top of the list because it has been proven to increase a person's chances of developing diabetes by interfering with breathing and proper body functioning.  Also, alcohol contains a lot of carbohydrates.  These carbohydrates are absorbed very quickly into the body, and it's easy to gain a lot of weight by drinking a lot of alcohol.  Then, a person increases his or her chances of developing diabetes because of all the added weight.
